Corresponding and possibly equivalent or interchangeable standard references - updated 2004-08-18
| Reference
Standards: TC67
guidance for selecting appropriate reference standards is given
in TC67 N435
subclause 4.4 and the issue of dual
references is further addressed in
Annex I. It is frequently asked what standards are "equivalent"; what ISO/IEC Standards should be referenced in place of national or industry standards, and for "dual" referencing. TC67 and ISO CS have prepared a list of "equivalent" standards, Version.4, August 2004 (Excel spreadsheet) for guidance, that should be used with caution because exact equivalence is not always the case. In some cases, the content between the covers (after the Foreword and any "special notes" etc.) is identical and is therefore equivalent in its entirety, in some cases the standards are equivalent for the purposes of making the reference, in some cases they are different but interchangeable, and in some cases one may incorporate another by normative reference in which case only the one is necessary. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure that the "equivalence" or interchangeability is determined for each particular case, and that the latest editions of standards are considered. TC67 and ISO CS would welcome any feedback to assist in maintaining this list. It should also be noted that the "dual references" guidance is not based around the standards themselves being "identical", but on the equivalence of the specific provisions relevant to the reference being made. |
